Haus Sickingen

Oberstraße 5, 55422 Bacharach

Timber-framed house / Post-and-beam construction

The house was built in the middle of the 15th century by the Rhine shipper Peter Ackermann. Through dendrochronological investigations, the beams of the half-timbering were dated to 1438. In 1450, the entire estate was consecrated (most likely on Corpus Christi), as attested by the inscription above the front door. The winery includes a garden and a pressing house, which still has 2 high cellars and a draw well. The pressing house dates back to at least the 13th century, as evidenced by the late Romanesque earthen wall construction there.

The building was constructed in a post-and-beam style, in which the vertical beams consist of a single trunk each. Horizontal beams were then inserted into these trunks.

The estate belonged to the Imperial Knight Franz von Sickingen, which is also where it gets its current name. It can be considered one of the oldest houses in Rhineland-Palatinate. It has been privately owned by the Petit-Lieberz family for around 300 years.
