Denkmal zum Binger Loch

Oberstraße 10, 55422 Bacharach

A monument was erected in 1832 to mark the establishment of the ship passage in the Rhine near Bingen, the "Binger Loch".

It consists of the hole stones blasted away in the Rhine and is located on the bank of the Rhine west of Bingerbrück. Its inscription reports: "At this point of the Rhine, a rocky reef narrowed the passage. It became ruinous to many ships. Under the reign of Frederick William III, King of Prussia, after three years of work, the passage was widened to 210 feet (about 66 m) ten times its former width. Blasted rock is used to build this monument." The monument is located at a stop on the B9 highway, west of the entrance to Bingerbrück.
