Stahleck Castle sits on its throne high above
the town - the castle was first mentioned
in 1135 in connection with
Lord Goswin von Stahleck.
The oldest part of the castle is probably in the
inner courtyard: the grand residential tower.

The western part of the castle was part of the
town's fortifications. And you can discover
something quite unusual for a hill-top castle:
a quadratic castle moat. The bridge right
beside it used to be the drawbridge.
Stahleck Castle - the former residence of the
Count Palatinate of the Rhineland -
is now one of the most well-known
youth hostels in Europe.
